Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2?Wizard is, well, a wizard and Wart, his faithful sidekick, is a continuously hungry bulldog. They decide that they both deserve a break so Wizard magically transports them to a lovely seaside resort that's crowded with conventions?the pickle packers, pansy potters, and plumbers. He settles down for a nap on the beach while Wart chows down on a huge sandwich. They're content for a while until sea gulls cover poor Wart, attempting to get at his sandwich. Reluctant at first to "work on vacation," Wizard becomes fed up with the pesky birds, and hastily works a spell?a little too hurriedly in fact?and now the beach is covered with goats. As each chapter progresses he makes things worse until he finally takes his time and casts just the right one. The humorous, colorful cartoons are a great addition to this silly story of two friends and magic gone awry. With its short, easy sentences and rollicking good humor, it's sure to appeal to beginning readers.?Jan Shepherd Ross, Dixie Elementary Magnet School, Lexington, KY

From Booklist
Gr. 1^-2. When Wizard and his pet dog, Wart, head off for a holiday, they are looking for relaxation. However, it seems trouble follows them wherever they go. Although Wizard insists he doesn't work on holidays, he winds up setting off spells that bring goats to the beach and lots of whales in the water. A little tangled at times, the book still has moments of fun and sprightly cartoon-style illustrations for new readers. Fans of the previous book about Wizard and Wart will enjoy this.
