Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2. In this story, a child's imagination creates a fantasy world in a familiar home setting. A young girl has a special key that opens a cupboard. A flight of stairs leads to a room where she keeps a witch folded inside a cardboard box. The two of them make a magic brew of bee stings, spit, marshmallows, purple ink, and "birthday candles with the wishes still in them." Three drops of the concoction?"Drip! Drop! POP!"?can make mysterious things happen, and soon an ordinary broom can fly. When the girl and the witch ride out into the night, they apply the secret potion to the shadows, creating a dangerous wizard who chases them; with each succeeding drop, the liquid also creates ways to outrun him. The adventure ends safely and the girl packs the witch away for another day. The full-page illustrations, primarily in aqua and yellows, have a strong sense of movement. Lines and crosshatching add texture and interest. The faces of the characters are painted as caricatures, giving the pictures a light, humorous tone.?Adele Greenlee, Bethel College, St. Paul,
