Introducing Amazon Video On Demand

by Armchair Commentary at 4:48 PM PDT, September 3, 2008
Downloading movies and TV shows is fine, but watching something immediately ... now, that's the stuff! And you can do exactly that at the just-launched Amazon Video On Demand. It's a new, PC and Mac-friendly way to enjoy shows like Heroes and movies like The Bank Job immediately. Miss this week's episode of Gossip Girl? Don't fret--it's here, commercial-free. And you can sign up for a TV Pass to guarantee that you'll get every episode as it airs (and save at least 5%).
Oh, and did I mention that the first couple of minutes of pretty much every title is free? Yup, it's true: You can try before you buy. We've also got a lot of stuff that's totally free: Watch it and it's yours today--and down the road. Speaking of down the road, once you've purchased something, you'll be able to access it later in Your Video Library. You don't even need to be at your own computer--you just have to be able to sign in to your Amazon account (and, of course, be connected to the web). Watch The Office at the office (you know, when you're on a break). Watch Waiting while you're waiting for a table at a restaurant. You'll still be able to do the download thing at Amazon Video On Demand, of course. Just use our Unbox video player and take your videos on the go, or download them to your TiVo DVR. Give it a try with a free episode of Heroes, 30 Rock or Lipstick Jungle. And let us know what you think (there's a feedback link in the video player on our new product detail pages). -- Stephanie Reid-Simons, TV Demander

Do you love quirky and sometimes awkward comedies? Were you a fan of Arrested Development? Then you should watch It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The quick wit, obscure humor and underdog appeal have definitely made this FX comedy a hit. With it's third season about to release on DVD (9/9) and fourth season about to premier (9/10), you still have time to catch up on all the ridiculousness of a show that is surely ahead of its time. Want to know more? Check out an interview with the cast of this self-proclaimed "snorf" comedy. Have no idea what that means? Well then, like I said, you better watch the interview below and get in with the cool kids.

What it is: Chuck (Zachary Levi) is a mild-mannered nerd working at Buy More (a barely veiled Best Buy) when he downloads a virus that implants the entire U.S. intelligence network into his brain.  Obviously that makes him a prime target, so he falls under the protection of two agents, Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski) and John Casey (Adam Baldwin), who become his only hope of leading a normal nerdy life.  But is his relationship with Sarah strictly professional?

Why it's Significant: Combining action and comedy, Chuck was my favorite new show of the 2007-08 season.  In fact, Chuck's sister's boyfriend would say it's "Awesome!"  Levi is charming in the title role, Baldwin is not too far off from his Firefly character of Jayne (that's a good thing), and the tough-yet-tender Strahovski was a breakout star.  Much like The X-Files' Gillian Anderson became the thinking man's crush, Strahovski became a fantasy for nerds everywhere, especially after appearing in the famous Princess Leia slavegirl outfit.  And for those of you used to watching your TV in high definition, there's a Blu-ray version as well. New to Chuck?  Watch the full NBC promo below.  --David

What it is:   Heralded by audiences and critics alike, Sleeping Beauty was the final fairy tale to be produced by Walt Disney himself. When an enchanted kingdom and the most fair princess in the land fall prey to the ultimate mistress of evil, the fate of the empire rests in the hands of three small fairies and a courageous prince's magic kiss. Their quest is fraught with peril as the fellowship must battle the evil witch and a fire-breathing dragon if they are to set the Beauty free.

Why It's Significant: Experience this groundbreaking film restored beyond its original brilliance in the way Walt envisioned it -- pristine, utterly breathtaking, and in High-Definition! Ok, so maybe Walt didn't know about Blu-ray ;).This is one of Disney's first titles to feature  BD Live capabilties PLUS an extra bonus standard definition DVD that is included so you can watch this classic at home and in the mini-van. Disney is also releasing a two-disc platinum edition available on DVD. --Angela

P.S. Did you know Sleeping Beauty's name was Aurora? You can learn more fun princess trivia in our Princess Store.

More Fun with Celebrity Interviews

by Armchair Commentary at 9:11 AM PDT, August 22, 2008

As those who were kind enough to watch my video from the Stargate Continuum red carpet already know, I'm the single coolest, most naturally-gifted celebrity interviewer the world has ever known. (Haha--sarcasm!)

Below, you can hear me titter incessantly in the background as I try to professionally interview the guys from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. (This is a hilarious show, BTW.) And ask Jensen Ackles from Supernatural the de rigueur question about Dean's (his character's) beloved Impala/his trip to Hell and back.  Again, a huge thanks the folks who were hapless enough to stumble in front of my camera--especially Rob McElhenney (Mac from It's Always Sunny)--for not being too cool to have his picture taken with the world's foremost entertainment journalist. --Leah

(PS: New seasons of both Supernatural and Always Sunny are pre-order-able now. Just saying.)

I love NFL Films. The booming voiceover. The super slo-mo. I swear, they could make turf toe seem majestic. So I'm feasting on their handiwork in the form of a bunch of free past-season recaps in our NFL Network store -- even the ones that aren't about my team, the Seahawks (hurry, they're only free through Tuesday). The New York Giants' story has the happiest ending, of course, so I've attached a preview of that one (you can get the whole thing here). -- Stephanie Reid-Simons, Unbox TV Freak

How to Be A Rock Star

by Armchair Commentary at 9:40 AM PDT, August 19, 2008

The summer musical sensation Camp Rock releases today and we've got some exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of the teen heartthrobs, The Jonas Brothers, tellings us what it takes to be a rock star.

Both the DVD and Blu-ray version release today -- Angela

Sometimes spending time around the star(s) of a TV show you enjoy can take the magic right out of it (I'm thinking here of a certain hunky hero type with the initials D.B.). But other times -- and these are really great times -- the cast is so cool that you find yourself upgrading a show from merely "interesting" to "new favorite." This was the case for me with Stargate Atlantis, after my colleague Leah and I got to interview cast members Joe Flanigan, Robert Picardo ("Star Trek: Voyager") and Jewel Staite ("Firefly"). Anyway, you can see for yourself: Check out our interview, and get some insights into the new season, which is airing now (you can watch it here, ad-free). Enjoy! -- Stephanie Reid-Simons, Unbox TV Freak

To me, Beijing's Olympics stadium -- dubbed "The Bird's Nest" -- looks like one of those impossible places, elaborately imagined by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron but impossible to translate in the real world. (As someone who lives near the mind-blowing work of Frank Gehry and Rem Koolhaas I should know better, of course.) But Bird's Nest is about more than architectural marvels: It's revelatory of culture, of the ways history is written -- and rewritten -- and of the way people and politics intersect. It's available only at Amazon Unbox, to rent or buy, starting at $2.99. (And you can a taste of the bold vision with the preview below.) -- Stephanie Reid-Simons

Bernie Mac, 1957-2008

by Armchair Commentary at 12:15 PM PDT, August 9, 2008

Actor-comedian Bernie Mac has passed away from pneumonia at the far-too-young age of 50.  He was known for a variety of roles, including the cranky dad in the self-titled Bernie Mac Show (watch below), a baseball player in Mr. 3000, and the Spencer Tracy role in the Guess Who's Coming to Dinner remake Guess Who--David
