OK, so they've actually been around since 1990. But 1,000 issues of any magazine is something to celebrate, and EW is doing it in style, with their trademark: lists, lists, and more lists. "The New Classics: The 1,000 Best Movies, TV Shows, Albums, Books & More of the Last 25 Years" is great fun, and ranks every form of media you can think of since 1983, with input from both editors and celebs. Where else could you find a magazine cover with Harry Potter, Maggie Simpson, Edward Scissorhands, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer? And lists written by Jodie Foster, Neil Gaiman, and and Liz Phair? Here's a list from none other than Viggo Mortensen, who reveals his top 10 pieces of advice he's heard on movie sets. There's something for everyone here, I think. (True, I'm biased because I adore him. But I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.) 1. ''One job at a time, and each job a success.'' 2. ''Whatever you are feeling at this moment can be useful, no matter how far removed or even distracting it may seem from the scene you are playing. That is as close to 'real' as you will ever get.'' 3. ''There is no way in hell that's going to work. That is the worst idea I have heard today perhaps ever. Are you trying to single-handedly ruin my movie?'' 4. ''Try it what's the harm? It's only film and time.'' 5. ''No hay dolor.'' (''There is no pain.'') 6. ''All you really need to play the moment is air and water.'' 7. ''When in doubt, admit it.'' 8. ''Don't tell me; show me.'' 9. ''Censors tend to do what only psychotics do: They confuse reality with illusion.'' 10. ''I love you.'' Happy weekend, everyone! -- Noelle W.

Movie Fashion Sees Green
by Armchair Commentary at 2:55 PM PDT, June 11, 2008
Green was the color of choice for director Alfonso Cuaron, who asked even the crew and extras to wear the color during production. The characters all wore green but none more so than Paltrow, whose heartbreaker-la-femme wardrobe for the film was designed by "Queen of Black" Donna Karan. In more recent times, green also makes the definitive statement for:
Other honorable mentions: (Yes, we know Jennifer Lopez's dress is not from a film. But when you put "fashion," "green," "confident" and "sexy" together, the mind cannot help making the jump). -- Ellen Tina Fey's a Cover Girl
by Amazon Newsstand at 2:24 PM PDT, April 15, 2008
If you're already watching "30 Rock," you'll know what I mean when I say that Liz Lemon would never expect to be on the cover of Marie Claire (even though she might wish for it, but would never tell anyone while sober). Lo and behold, this week, we have not one, but two glam Tina Fey covers to celebrate. All this after last month's slightly naughty Vanity Fair cover with her, Amy Poehler, and Sarah Silverman. Are women funny, indeed. So I have to ask: has any other "SNL" Weekend Update anchor ever tackled this many careers at once? From writer to actor to model to Hollywood power girl, Tina has catapulted from proud geek to ironically chic in just a few short years. Nothing else quite has the cache of a fashion magazine cover. Does Tina's success mean that we'll see more women on the covers of magazines who represent more than just a pretty face? Only time will tell. But I'm pretty sure that's what Liz Lemon would want. -- Noelle W.
There Will Be Red!
by Armchair Commentary at 10:41 AM PST, February 25, 2008
The red carpet has never been redder, with the attention-grabbing hue clearly being the ladies color of choice. There was also a conspicuous abundance of Greek and empire waist gowns, the type of award-show-only fashion drama that probably wont trickle down into suburbs anytime soon. Continuing the conservative trend of the last several years, the stars played it safe, resulting in lots of hits and very few misses. As a fashion spectator, thats not entirely desirable and I found myself longing for a glimpse of Cher or Bjork.
My friend Daniel and I took a few minutes to discuss a sampling of the fashion highs and lows on Hollywoods biggest night.
Jessica Alba Sheldon Jessica Alba plays it safe in an aubergine empire wasted chiffon gown. This tasteful number isnt making any waves, nor should it. After all, shes pregnant. Wold - Some will be torn, and purple is not a favorite of mine, but I have to say that this is one of the standouts for me. Jessica looks royally stunning in this Marchesa gown. A surprisingly sophisticated and regal turn for Jessica that worked.
Marion Cotillard
Sheldon - Shimmering and iridescent, Marion Cotillard radiates a winning look with a little help from Jean-Paul Gaultier and his mother-of-pearl mermaid-inspired gown. With this form-fitting sea-faring frock, shes no fish out water! Wold - I agree, and then some. Marion alongside native legendary French designer Jean-Paul Gaultier has sirens singing beautifully in this flattering & sophisticated dress. This is the just-risky-enough but totally classic look I was waiting for all evening.
Cameron Diaz
Wold Maybe the fact that I love prom dresses, Christian Dior, and the color pink can explain my endorsement of Camerons gown. Having said that, even with frequent missteps, Cameron almost always manages to rock her look. Sheldon - Agreed. Camerons rosy tones are matched flawlessly in the color of her gown. The simple cut of the dress is flattering to her clothes-hanger figure. She looks confident and happy.
Katherine Heigl
Wold - Katherine has a captivating beauty that reminds me of 50s pin-up queens and larger than life beauties like Marilyn Monroe & Jane Russell. She can wear anything she wants and look fabulous, and she does just that in this beautiful red gown that summed up the look of the night. Sheldon I Agree that she looks terrific in a ladies-who-lunch Fortuny sort of way. However, I dont quite get the cinched-hole shoulder strap.
Nicole Kidman
Sheldon I get it. Nicole is expecting so shes trying to downplay the fact in this Balenciaga original while masquerading her pregnancy with lots of accessories. However, I would rather she work a Chanel look while with child, especially on the red carpet. Wold I dont get it. Nicole Kidman is a classic beauty--is all of this bling and the shadow-of-a-Chanel necessary? At best this dress resembles a sexy but slightly ill-fitting nightie. Overall a disappointment but only because Nicole sets such a high standard.
Tilda Swinton
Wold - Tilda is quite the style icon and her risk taking is impressive and notorious. However, her look didnt win me over; it was a tad too severe and by the way, what happened to her other sleeve? I tip my hat to her for her courageous attempt but better luck next time. Sheldon - Tildas one-shouldered androgynous look leaves me lukewarm. Ziggy Startdust meets Glad-bag. Her ethereal beauty demands better. - World Of Wold & special guest editor Daniel Sheldon
