Not Mac Friendly
on September 13, 2012
This was a Gold Box Deal from Woot on Monday, September 10, 2012. Let me start off by saying the Canon D420 is an attractive machine and appears to be well built. The unit was packaged very well and arrived quickly. I think it may be an older style, the product manual is dated 2008. The trouble for me began with attempting to install the printer/scanner software on my Mac Mini, 2.26 Core 2 Duo running Lion 10.7.4. The manual is written in very poor English, which at first was annoying, but quickly became frustrating. The screen shots and text shown in the manual don't exist in Lion. I gave up and went to the Canon website and downloaded the current software from their support page. Apparently, the driver package in the download is a set of universal drivers for older Canon products and you must decipher what part of the package is applicable to the D420. I went through the installation as per the instructions and the printer was detected. However, printing failed. The several attempts I made to print a basic document from Libre Office all ended with error messages. The "DATA" light never activated on the printer control panel. I don't have time to go very deep into the troubleshooting for this printer, so I am sending it back. Amazon is great about taking things back. I printed out a UPS prepaid shipping label and will take it to my local UPS store. This is the first item I have ever sent back to Amazon in my years of online shopping with them. In short, if you have an older computer and some patience, this may be a good deal.
